How To: Layering Your Skincare

So you’ve invested in some high quality skin care products - great! Now you can move on to mastering the art of layering.

So where to start? Here at Sabbia Co we have created a step by step routine for you to follow with each of our products. If you’re using a different brand, of course refer to the label and check if there’s a recommended application process. In general, however, this routine can be used for any type of skincare, because it focuses on how different products interact with each other, and with your skin.

Whatever products you are using, there are a few rules you can always rely on:

  1. Layer products ‘thin to thick’ - start with the thinnest consistency product and move through to the thickest one.
  2. Oils should go on last, because they will block anything else you put on afterward from soaking into your skin.
  3. Sunscreen is an exception to the oil rule - sunscreen isn’t adding anything to your skin, it’s just creating a protective barrier between skin and sun, so it doesn’t need to be absorbed and can be applied last.

The Sabbia Routines include all our current products, however if you don’t have them all yet just follow the steps that apply to you. We’ve included an AM and PM routine, so you can pick the one you need now and get started. Additionally, we’ve added a guide to facial cupping/gua sha at home. If you’re keen to learn more about this practice, we’ve written a full article about it here

The ultimate skin kit is your go-to skin kit to turn your skincare routine into a daily RITUAL of cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating, and SELF LOVING!

AM Routine

Step 1: Spray Botanical Glow Cleanser on Konjac Sponge (repeat step twice if you have any makeup on) and cleanse/exfoliate your face and neck.

Step 2: Apply Matcha/Charcoal Mask (mask 2-3 times a week). Once dry, remove with reusable makeup pad/cloth and water.

Step 3: Spray Revive Face Mist onto damp skin.

If using facial tools (Gua Sha/Facial Cup), apply now with Antioxidant Repair Oil. You can skip steps 4-6 if you prefer to just use the oil from this process.

Step 4: Wait 60 seconds, apply Collagen C Serum.

Step 5: Wait 60 seconds, apply Multi-Vitamin Moisturiser.

Step 6: Wait 60 seconds, apply Antioxidant Repair Oil.

Step 7: Wait 60 seconds, apply SPF sunscreen.

Step 8: Wait 60 seconds, apply Mineral BB Cream.

Done! Repeat as necessary and enjoy the results.

Why do I have to wait 60 seconds?

Each product needs time to be absorbed and activated within your skin. Adding another product on top without waiting can dilute both products and prevent your skin from getting the full benefit of either one.

Why do I only mask 2-3 times a week?

Masking is a more intensive process and depending on your skin type, can dry out or irritate your skin if you do it too often or leave it on for too long. Masking should be used consistently, not excessively, to detox and cleanse your skin. If you’re keen to learn more about masking and #multimasking, we’ve written a full article about it here

PM Routine

Step 1: Remove makeup/SPF/day with reusable makeup pad/cloth and water.

Step 2: Spray Botanical Glow Cleanser on Konjac Sponge (repeat step twice if you have any makeup on) and cleanse/exfoliate your face and neck.

Step 3: Apply Matcha/Charcoal Mask (mask 2-3 times a week). Once dry, remove with reusable makeup pad/cloth and water.

Step 4: Spray Revive Face Mist onto damp skin.

If using facial tools (Gua Sha/Facial Cup), apply now with Antioxidant Repair Oil. You can skip steps 5-7 if you prefer to just use the oil from this process.

Step 5: Wait 60 seconds apply Collagen C Serum.

Step 6: Wait 60 seconds apply Multi-Vitamin Moisturiser.

Step 7: Wait 60 seconds apply Antioxidant Repair Oil.

Remember to do your evening skincare routine at least 2 hours before bed, otherwise you will lose product on the pillow/sheets before it’s absorbed. Sweet dreams!

What temperature water should I wash with? Stick to warm or cold water - avoid exposing your face to hot water wherever you can. Test the temperature with your inner wrist, as this is most similar in texture to your facial skin. Hot water is damaging to the skin’s protective barrier and strips away natural oils and hydration, creating irritation.

What difference does the order make? Any skincare routine should focus on three things: cleansing, toning and moisturising. The order we have listed above ensures that you tick off all those tasks, and give your skin enough time to properly benefit from each product. Hybrid or ‘all-in-one’ products can often dilute ingredients and this routine focuses on doing one thing at a time, properly.

Now you’re feeling confident with your new AM and PM routines, you might like to try out facial cupping/gua sha with our facial cup or gua sha tool.

These are both simple, relaxing and effective treatments which help to sculpt your face, stimulate collagen production, increase lymphatic flow and enhance skin cell renewal. The routine below will stimulate pressure points around your face, neck and shoulders that energise your lymphatic system and improve the function of your skincare.

If you include these in your daily routine, aim to spend 10 minutes on this step. Ideally, you can also spend half an hour each week simply performing either of these treatments for optimum rejuvenation.

Facial Cupping/Gua Sha Routine

Step 1: Apply Antioxidant Repair Oil to your face, squeeze the cup, and place it on the skin, creating a light suction to the skin.

Step 2: Glide the cup in an upward direction, squeeze to break the suction, and repeat.

Step 3: Working from right to left in a circle (right jawline, right cheek, forehead, left cheek, left jawline).

Step 4: Repeat each motion 5-10 times.

Whether you’re a skincare pro or just starting out, establishing a layering routine is key. Over time, these small details make all the difference - both to your skin and your wallet. While our budgets and skin types may differ, we all deserve to get optimal results from our skincare, and applying products properly is a great way to accomplish this.

Big love always,
