Me (Katie) & a cup of tea

Hi #sabbiasquad it's Katie your Co-Founder and Creative at Sabbia Co. This week I featured in an interview and thought I would share it with you.
Tell us a little about yourself & what self care means to you:
I'm Katie, just turned 26 (ahh!) I grew up in Port Douglas (QLD) and have now been living on the Gold Coast for almost 7 years. I have a background in marketing however my biggest passion is skincare and health. From as long as I can remember I have been interested in cooking, arts and crafts and DIY. When I hit my late teenage years I really began to explore skincare and creating my own masks and scrubs out of things we had in the pantry.

Self care to me means filling my cup. Sometimes this can be through listening to podcasts, drawing, yoga or cooking (that's my Italian background coming through). Something that is a nonnegotiable in my life is my skin routine, this is my most important daily ritual that is an expression of the love and care I have for myself. It is very basic and takes all of 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes at night (unless I'm doing a mask) but it makes me feel centred, loved and grateful.

What inspired you to create Sabbia Co?
My partner Dave and I have traveled around the globe and each time have both been devastated by the amount of single-use items we find on the most remote beaches in the world. After a trip in 2018 we came home and set a goal to somehow change the game. As mentioned I have a huge passion for skin, skin health and well-being, my partner Dave is a surfer duude and green-thumb. We both do our bit in our home to reduce our footprint, but wanted to do more. And that’s where Sabbia Co was born.

Sabbia translates to sand in Italian (I’m half pasta/half Aussie). It really resonated with us to create something that could serve its purpose and then essentially go back into the earth.

Sabbia Co is an ethical brand with minimal impact on the environment, we create unique facial kits out of sustainable, biodegradable, reusable, eco-friendly & chemical-free tools. These kits cleanse, exfoliate and remove makeup with just WATER!
Why just water? Because our mission is to keep the water going down the drain and out to our oceans as green as possible. Many cosmetics and skincare items are manufactured with over 10,500 unique chemical ingredients. Some are known carcinogens and either toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system. It's not necessary and it's slowly killing our planet.

Another key factor was the items consumers use in their skin/beauty routine, for example plastic exfoliating sponges or makeup wipes. The average makeup wearer uses over 700 makeup removing wipes each year - that’s not including the wipes used for cleansing, hands and babies. It takes over 100 years for 1 makeup wipe to break down in landfill. This is why we decided to incorporate reusable makeup pads in our kits. They can be washed over 200 times and will replace roughly 1,000 single use makeup wipes from going into landfill.

We launched just under 6 months ago and to date, we have roughly stopped 4 million single-use makeup wipes going into landfill. Our mission is to turn consumers skin/beauty routines into rituals using reusable skin care tools to eliminate single-use consumerism.

What's the ultimate skincare routine to practice self care while we're all staying home a lot more these days?
We have just launched our #selfisolation kit - it is the ultimate pamper pack to fill your self love cup! It has our hero kit the face it face kit, our signature matcha clay mask and exfoliating coffee scrub and I'm OBSESSED.
However, I know lots of us have unfortunately lots our income (us included) due to COVID19 and if that's you here are some fun DIY pamper ideas.
Manuka honey and lemon face mask (my favourite)
Matcha tea and Manuka honey face mask
Lemon and sugar face (be gentle) and body scrub
Bicarb body scrub
Get creative (you have the time, and the internet)! I love researching DIY beauty and skincare recipes on google and also Pinterest.
That's enough from me! Thank you for reading and if you want to learn more or get in touch check us out at @sabbiaco
Until then, wash your hands, stay inside and keep positive!
Big love, Katie x
